Anyone seen Run Fatboy Run 2007. Watch full length the booksellers movies. This year marks my second year watching anime regularly (originally shunning the medium). This was also my first year I actively kept up with the airing seasonal anime. What a ride it was. I just wanted to make this post to collect my thoughts and go back over all the stuff I watched this year and share it all with you. Also so you can critique my ever spiral of descent into becoming a full weeb. This is on a complete whim so bear with the terrible "reviews" and formatting. For format I will break this up into each season then give an overall thoughts of highlights of the season pointing out moments from shows that stuck with me. Rewatches are a seperate category and will link to the index threads. Also note that my AOTS does not account for score exactly. I instead give it based on looking back upon the season after awhile. Hence why it seems strange lower scoring shows can get a AOTS - sorry its just my mindset! Lets do this! Winter 2018 Show Score (x/10) Notes Citrus 7. 7 Dub Darling In The FranXX 8. 9 Dub Death March to The Parallel World Rhapsody 6. 9 Dub How To Keep A Mummy 7. 9 Karakai Jozu No Takagi-san - Dropped (4/12) Katana Maidens ~ Toji No Miko - Dub, Paused (18/24) Ms. Koizumi Loves Ramen Noodles 7 Slow Start 8 Takunomi 6. 7 My first season. Gotta say I played it safe for the most part. I rode the hype wave of Citrus with the rest of the community and while not as badly was somewhat let down. While the anime itself wasn't bad digging into the source material left me a bit salty. Darling in the FranXX was a show I enjoyed for its journey. Yeah the last 1/4 of the show was all of the place but I enjoyed it. Hoping for a sequel of some sort, but won't be upset if it didn't happen. Death March I gave a 6. 9 (heh). Subconscious me is funny sometimes. The show itself was rather boring and was the beginning of me starting to notice the trends of the 'isekai harem' genre. My biggest gripe was the whole thing felt like a giant setup (for a world scale story) with no payoff. Mummy was a show that pleasantly surprised me. I knew it was gonna be cute but it was the first thing I watched if an episode was available. Takagi-san just wasn't my style sadly. I was excited for the premise but watching it was cringe for me. I am still trying to finish Katana Maidens. I'm just freaking cause if I finish it I won't have it to watch anymore. Ms. Koizumi was an odd show. I didn't dislike it, the character interactions were cute and I learned a lot about ramen. It just felt like it could maybe do more but I don't know how. Slow Start was my cute fix for the season. All the characters were adorable and the story was really nice. I got what I wanted from it so I can not complain. Takunomi I started after the season ended cause I had finally got HiDive. It was a pleasant show, I am suprised it is getting a dub however. The drink mixes are also really good; I tried a few myself. AOTS: Slow Start Spring 2018 Show Score (x/10) Notes Alice or Alice 7. 8 Caligula - Dropped (6/12) Comic Girls 8. 3 Crossing Time 8. 2 Dances with the Dragons - Dub, Dropped (4/12) Devil's Line - Paused (5/12) Frankenstein Family - Dropped (4/12) Highschool DxD Hero 9 Dub Hinamatsuri 8. 6 Dub Kakuiryo "Bed & Breakfast for Spirits" - Dub, Paused (5/26) Love To-LIE-Angle 8. 1 My Sweet Tyrant 7. 4 Real Girl - Paused (7/12) SAO Alternative: GGO 8. 1 Dub Tada Never Falls In Love - Paused (7/13) Umamusume: Pretty Derby 8. 5 Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku 9. 4 This was the season I went a bit overboard and had to cut some stuff cause otherwise I would of died of over exposure. A lot of my rewatches happened around this time as well. Alice or Alice was slightly disappointing due to being a short. However it was cute and I am a sucker for sibling love stuff (plus silver haired twins! ) plus those maid outfits!!! Caligula did nothing to pull me in. I stuck with it till episode 6 hoping something would catch me but nothing. Shame really cause I like the ideas but the execution dragged. Comic Girls is contender for AOTY for me (and a runner up for AOTS). Like this show is great. I loved all the characters and the development. Moe-blobs like Kaos-chan will always captivate me. Sorry not sorry. I started Crossing Time late into the season after I randomly found it. Being a show based on interactions this executed perfectly. The short form also helped this show a lot. We need now come to a block of shows dropped or paused. Dragons was similar to Caligula, nothing drew me in. Devil's Line I paused due to being sick of switching between various different streaming platforms. You will notice all the paused shows were on HiDive. At the time their player was garbage on web and there were no apps. Real Girl and Tada falls into this as well. Frankenstein Family was a TV short. This pissed me off as its marked as TV. The last 10 minutes are taken up by the voice actors doing some sort of panel thing. Oh and the first like 5 minutes are a recap of the past episode - seriously. I hoped it was just a episode 1/2 thing but nope. Sorry but that's cheap to me. For HSDxD Hero there were doubts about the studio switch. Passione hit it out of the park IMO. A great continuation to what I think is one the best in its genre. Hinamatsuri was just hilarious. Seriously like whoever came up with this concept needs a damn award. This was my runner up for AOTS and is also a contender for AOTY. If you haven't seen it, go watch it now! Kakuiryo was one I sadly shelved due to IRL pressure. Plus this show felt like I would like it better if I binged it later. What little I saw I did like though. Love to-LIE-Angle is another short that I was super excited for. Its a shame of the episode length but damn did the show feel good. Its rare thing I think for a full female only harem and I was being teased by what I saw. My Sweet Tyrant was another short that was great all the way through. Just a wholesome good time. SAO with swords. OK. Wait its actually a bit better than the actual SAO. Give me more LLENN. Seriously though I was excited no matter what cause I love SAO but this did surprise me how well it worked with any swords. Well until that scene... Darth Pito forever! Umamusume was my sleeper hit of this season. Like this show got way more budget than they deserved and they used it well. This show also introduced my to the idol genre - take that as you will. Finally my AOTS Wotakoi. Damn this show was great and I think is the best representation of love for otakus. Get Amazon and watch this show people it is good. AOTS: Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku Summer 2018 Show Score Notes Angels Of Death 8. 2 Dub Asobi Asobase 8. 8 Cells At Work! 9 Chio's School Road 8. 6 Dub Hanebado! 6. 3 Dub Happy Sugar Life - Paused / Dropped (4/12) Harukana Receive 7. 6 Dub Holmes of Kyoto - Dropped (5/12) How Not To Summon A Demon Lord 7 Dub ISLAND 8. 3 Dub One Room Second Season 7 Phantom in the Twilight - Dropped (7/12) The Master of Ragnarok & Blesser of Einherjar 7 Dub Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs 8 We are now halfway through the year! I think I finally got the hang of this now. I am not a horror person, nor a psychological thriller kind of guy. Hence even though people constantly recommend Death Note and Tokyo Ghoul I still have yet to watch them. Angels Of Death was perfect for me I think and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I like it. Hence its deserving of AOTS for me. Asobi Asobase. The fuck even is this show. Like even now I am trying to figure out what the hell I watched for 12 weeks. Was it funny - hell yeah. Was it off the walls insane - no question. Cells At Work! was a sleeper for me. It looked cute so I picked it up and somehow I was invested. Seriously RBCxWBC is adorable. Chio's was another show I watched very confused but enjoyed. Shes a gamer like me and her Assassin's Creed moments had me dying. Actually the character interactions in this show were slightly better than Asobi only because they were realistic. Hanebado! was the show I wish I hadn't watched but finished anyways. Although if someone starts a religion around Darth Ayano I would sign up instantly. Seriously love that girl to death. This is one of my first two ever sports based shows that I watched. Happy Sugar Life I'm not sure about if I want to finish. Let me know what you think. Harukana Receive gave me exactly what I wanted - girls in swimsuits playing a very, ahem, bouncy sport. Seriously too much work went into the fan service bits but it was totally worth the budget I think. Them butts were great. Also implied yuri gets me going so. No I am not ashamed. Holmes of Kyoto seemed interesting. However it was moving too slow for me honestly and I lost interest. Demon Lord - wasn't bad. In fact I argue it was well executed. However it felt stale at times. A good addition to its genre but nothing stood out for me other than character designs (like Rem who is adorable AF). ISLAND was a fun journey for me. Granted a lot of the community seemed let down by it I was happy. It did get a bit confusing near the end but whatever. One Room. I binged season one after hearing what this show was about. I love the little arc format for the girls and they are all so cute. I ship all the ships from that show cause I am the protagonist. Phantom didn't draw me in. Similar to how Caligula did the season before I just felt bored and nothing was moving. Shame cause I like vampire, werewolves and the like. Ragnarok was another harem show this season that hit all the notes but didn't seem to have any personality. Demon Lord at least had fun with itself but Ragnarok seemed to take itself to seriously. I finished the show more out of commitment rather than enjoyment in the end. Yuuna was the show I was looking forward to all the season. Its another harem but this time was supernatural girls. Yes, I know done a thousand times over. Something about this show captivated me however and I loved it. It wasn't really original but it did everything right, unlike Ragnarok and Demon Lord. AOTS: Angels Of Death Fall 2018 Show Score Notes Anima Yell! 7. 8 As Miss Beelzebub Likes It. 8. 4 Between the Sky and Sea - Dropped (2/12) Bloom Into You 10 Sub / Dub Boarding School Juliet - Paused (6/12) Iroduku: The World In Colors 10 Jingai-san no Yome 6 Ms. vampire who lives in my neighborhood 8. 5 My Sister, My Writer 5 Rascal Does Not Dream Of Bunny Girl Senpai 9. 6 Release The Spyce 8. 3 Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san 8 That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime - Still airing The Girl in Twilight - Dropped (2/12) UzaMaid! 8. 2 Zombieland Saga 8 THE LEGENDARY TAE YAMADA Okay this time I got the hang of this for the season! Almost everything I chose to watch I stuck with and finished. If I dropped it was cause early on I knew I wasn't going to enjoy it. Anima Yell! is another sport-ish show I picked up. Lead girl reminded my of Kaos-chan my glorious spirit animal from earlier in the year. Ended up being a cute show that I was always looking forward to seeing. Fluff is all that can describe Beelzebub. This show is seriously too cute and filled with pastel colors and moe blobs galore. A runner up for AOTS for me for being just some damn adorable. Between the Sky and Sea was bizarre AF. Just no for me. Bloom Into You. This is the first show that I actually had read source before even an announcement for the show. My hype can not be measured for this show. TROYCA did not disappoint in any way other than its not a full! This is what Citrus should of been I think. Anyone who loves romance of any kind give this a shot I think you will love it. AOTY contender hands down. Boarding School Juliet while cute just didn't exactly hold me. Its undecided if I will finish it. Iroduku is my AOTS. This show is as many have said a spiritual successor to Nagi no Asukura and I agree. I loved every second of this show and high recommend to anyone. This is a rare show that actually made me cry. The animation, the art, the characters. I was invested by end of episode one. This outshines everything in so many ways. Jingai-san is a cute show I grabbed due to its weirdness. Had this been a full 24 minutes I probably would of dropped. The short format really helped this show and made it bearable. vampire is another I had read source before it was announced. This show is seriously cute. Seeing Akari animated was brilliant and funny. OP/ED were really good too - "chu chu chu". My Sister, My Writer. The trainwreck that took r/anime by storm. I was going to watch cause incest plot but damn did this show run itself into the ground. I am glad I was here to witness it first hand. Bunny Girl Senpai. A Monogatari clone? Definitely influenced but not a clone. I went in thinking I was gonna get a sexy bunny girl all season - but was surprised by how much I loved it. This show is a contender for AOTY for me - not because of its various influence that I love but because it was execute so well. I actually cared about the plot and its characters and want to learn more. Time to get the LNs! Release The Spyce I watched the same time as the Princess Principal dub came out. I had a double dosing of spy stuff. This show had the cute down very well and its action scenes were good. See my review here for more. Honda-san! I-S... B-N! I-S... B-N! This show was great and really captures an actual work environment well - just like Wotakoi did earlier in the year. Please watch this! I hold judgement on Slime until its fully over. However cour 1 was a solid 8-9 for me. Girl in Twilight was dropped due to not being very interesting. You win some, you lose some I guess. UzaMaid! is pure cancer and I will eat it everyday if I could. Seriously this show is off the walls insane. If you can look past the whole loli thing its great. Zombieland Saga. I wanted a zombie horror thing. I got idols. Am I upset? Fuck no cause this what Truck-kun gave us and I praise him no matter what. Another AOTY runner up. Highly recommend for the LEGENDARY TAE YAMADA!! AOTS: Iroduku: The World In Colors Rewatches If Notes field is blank or has '+' before a phrase assume "First-timer" also. I won't do a rewatch generally to rewatch something but instead to actually watch something that has been on my PTW list for ages. Standouts here are Land Of The Lustrous, Hibiki Euphonium, Non Non Biyori, Monogatari, FMA:Brotherhood and NGE. I actually helped complete the Shana rewatch and being one of my all time favorite anime it was a pleasure to see it all over again with the community. JoJo got boring sadly and I decided to put it on hold until I was up for it again (7/24 for Battle in Egypt in case anyone was wondering where I stopped). Binged These are shows I watched myself between rewatches and seasons. That or I was bored and felt like watching something different. Show Score Notes Date A Live 8. 7 Dub Kiss Him, Not Me 7. 2 Kimi ni Todoke 7. 8 Only season 1 and special Ouran High School Host Club 8 Dub Actually, I Am 6. 4 Dance With Devils 5 Dub Golden Time 8. 9 Tanaka-kun is Always Listless 8 Dub Yosuga No Sora 10 Gabriel DropOut 7. 8 Tsuredure Children 9 Dub I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying 7, 7 Love Is Like A Cocktail 7 There might of been more but due to MAL going down in February (? ) all my start/complete times are screwed up. Highlights here are OHSHC which was fantastic, Tanaka-kun and Yosuga No Sora (the beginnings of my weird fetish start here friends! ). Not much else to say here, most of these are a blur to me. Other than I do remember saying to myself not to watch something like Dance with Devils again (reverse harem). However Kiss Him, Not Me did not disappoint and wasn't as cringy. It was more amusing than anything due to its premise. Conclusion Well there is is my first seasonal year of anime. It went by pretty fast and I shocked just how much I watched over the year. Note to self: create an extension to AniList to add some more search/sorting stuff to lists for by season and stuff. Overall I would say I stuck to my comfort zone in genres, and only watched what I knew I would enjoy. Goals for next year are to branch out a bit more (hopefully), knock out a few big titles from my PTW that are must sees, and do some more reviews of shows I watch. Shows that I must watch by end of next year I think are: Air Akame ga Kill! Beyond The Boundry Fate Series (that I have missed) Hyouka Is the Order a Rabbit? Kanon Kill la Kill Love Chunibyo & Other Delusions Nisekoi Oreimo Seitokai Yakuindomo Student Council's Discretion The Ancient Magus Bride The Familiar of Zero The Garden of Sinners To Love Ru Violet Evergarden Your Lie In April I welcome suggestions, check out my AniList and let me know what I should really try to watch. Finally I guess I should award a AOTY for myself. Here are my nominations... From Winter 2018: Darling in the FranXX, Slow Start, and Citrus From Spring 2018: Comic Girls, Hinamatsuri and Wotakoi: Love is Hard for Otaku From Summer 2018: Angels of Death, Cells At Work! and Chio's School Road From Fall 2018: Bloom Into You, Iroduku: The World in Colors, and Rascals Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai and the winner of AOTY 2018 is... *drum-roll* Bloom Into You! *applause* Silliness aside I had a blast watching anime this year and can't wait for next year and all the shows I will see. Thanks for reading see you next year here on the same bat channel!

Newer dwarven cities on the surface may not match the grandeur of their subterranean counterparts or the impressive sky citadels from ages passed, but they are often more colorful, cosmopolitan and above all else, commercial. Ambitious dwarven merchant barons are keen to expand their trade and encourage an expansive view of the world, but have to balance that ambition with their society’s desire to preserve the old ways—so they scramble to erect edifices to conspicuously display their wealth, commemorate their past, and advertise the health of their markets. In some quarters, inhabitants might cling harder to their traditions and the ties of clan and family become more important. In others, the dwarven inhabitant eschew or outright reject the past, fraternize with other peoples and embrace novelty. Let’s Build encounters, events and interesting locales in a young dwarven surface city! What should a party of adventurers seek out, watch out for or avoid in a young bustling above-ground dwarven city? Where’s the best mead gulped down accompanied by the lustiest shanties? Where can they turn in the dwarven artefacts they’ve collected for coin or recognition? What could they do to earn a reputation as heroes? What businesses should they patronize before they head out to the next city? What temples should they visit for boon and blessing? So here I go again turning to you good folk because my campaign needs a dwarven city (and I don’t know dwarven cities very much). In my world dwarves are still recovering from a period of political and cultural descent, and perhaps commerce is one way to restore their place in the world. While typically dwarven cities might be at least as much under ground as above it, this one that my adventurers might visit is actually newer and grew out of a trading and commercial hub—so I’m sorta less keen on things subterranean (of course, that fits my general agenda to flip expectations). That could mean that they are drawing on human architecture, that could mean they are considerably more mixed, population-wise, it probably mean there’s lot of commercial and diplomatic things going on, that could mean that some faction of dwarves really disapprove of this kind of living. I’m inviting any kinds of submissions, really—you could write them like its out of a guide book entry, or how an NPC might say it, or really any way we’ve been doing it on r/D100. Just interested in flavor, plothooks and colorful characters. If you are looking for dwarven clan names we've come up with this list: If you are looking for dwarven quirks, we've come up with this: d100 Type Description 1 Event - Copperpot's Wyvern Riders Airshow Agnette Copperpot has announced the second annual airshow of her fleet of wyvern riders next Tenthday at the Plaza of Martyrs. The popular tale is that some time ago she came across a nest of wyvern eggs and she’s nurtured the hatchlings to the adolescent age that they are now. She’s convinced that wyverns could be incorporated into the defence of the city. The last airshow was something of an entertaining disaster. Two wyverns collided into each other and both riders were thrown off. A sorcerer bystander were able to cast feather fall on one, but the other broke his leg in the fall. One invited dignitary had the misfortune of being under a wyvern when it needed to relieve itself. Some elders complain that dwarves weren’t meant to take to the air, and a regiment of sharpshooters from Dragonwatch HQ are rumored to attend for security but the turn out is still expected to be tremendous. This year, Agnette promises a much more disciplined show, though word is that she is short a rider or two and that she is also looking for adventurers to be on site for support. 2 Location - Lapidary Street Lapidary Street is not so much a street but a couple of blocks where the most established gem and precious stone traders conduct their business. It’s become customary for rich enough businesses to erect a statue outside the store of a dwarf clasping an exemplar of best cut, most valuable stone of the type the owners specializes in. The competition of the best stone has grown and a business can make its mark by commissioning the best artisans to create their statues. It’s also meant that the businesses have had to collectively employ an around-the-clock patrol to ensure that no one deprives the statue of their stones, which includes today three golem constructs. 3 Location - The Happy Gnome An establishment erected in the city by a young Gnome and his wife, The Happy Gnome is a small restaurant and festhall specializing in delicacies and fine, rich beers and ales. Trained by the finest chefs of the Halfling and gnomeish masters in the Great Kingdom, his food is perhaps a bit too fancy for a typical dwarf. It is however excellent and is often visited by many travelers and merchants who come to the city. His pride and joy is a house brewed ale; deep amber in color, thick and malty to the taste, with a steep head of foam, the Gnome's Delight is a signature brew and often used to baste the roasted meats or braised dishes. Even persnickety Dwarves will admit the ale-braised carrots and rabbit is a dish worthy of the King. 4 Dispute - "Property Brothers" Whilst plotting out the city, two different Clans have claimed the same plot of land for their Clan House. This great meeting hall is a place for food, beer, and rejoicing, but it is also where all Clan politics are dealt with, including inheritance courts, assigning apprenticeships, and marriage contracts. Both claim to have claimed the land first, and it is in a prime location, overlooking the marketplace and near both the primary water source as well as the town hall. Worse, all the other Clans have claimed their own plots and begun, the only remaining land is far from any civic center or near the town refuse pits. 5 Dispute Two different crews have crossed into each other's work space. The first group is digging an aqueduct that will bring fresh water to the city center while the second group is following a vein of good ore. Both have the proper permits and permissions, but somehow someone goofed and the tunnel lines cross! What happens now? 6 Location - The Geode District The Geode District is built out of a stripped gem mine and is home to dwarves working with an unknown source of magic to create artificial gems that light the city. 7 Dispute - The Ironfist brothers are at it again. Leaders of two of the major guilds in town, Thorig and Duldain Ironfist are brothers who can't stop competing to prove themselves to be part of the best guild. In the past, the competition was mostly between the brothers only, trying to prove themselves more worthy than the other in... everything, This is because their guilds acted in such different markets, Thorig with his Lunar Forge, a place deep inside the Blacksmith's Hall, where he would cast the most impressive Dwarvish weapons, while Duldain produced his Gold Nugget Root Beer, arguably the best beer in town in his brewery. But as their disputes grew, so did their boldness. Until The day Duldain decided to take on his brother on his on expertise. Every night, tinks could be heard from the brewery caldera. And one day, Duldain came out with a weapon that wielded the power of gunpowder, but was much faster than the usual guns. It had six barrels and they shifted between themselves with such speed, no one could dream to compete with such a weapon. What will be of Thorig? How is the brother responding to this? And most importantly, WHAT incited Duldain's creativity to create a weapon no Dwarf has ever considered before? 8 Location - Surtr's Furnace Snorri Snorrison is a rare being: a dwarf with no talent for blacksmithing. Apprenticed for over fifty years without making even a single Journeyman piece, he was finally dismissed from his master with the admonition of "Never have I seen a worse smith. Go live among the humans, maybe you can shoe a horse for them. " Snorri did just that. For twenty years he worked in various human villages and towns, travelling about and repairing pots, pans, and shoeing horses. From time to time he would stay for a season and help the humans make plows or a few years in a row, spears. After all, even a terrible Dwarf is a better than most. In any event, Snorri eventually came across a people that made something wonderful: meats skewered and grilled over raging coals and deep furnaces! What's more, it was something he could do, and do well! Quickly learning the recipes of spices and marinades, Snorri returned to the city and opened a new food stand in an abandoned smithy. There, he used the furnace as a oven to make the special "Tandori" style meats and flatbreads, and the deep coal fired pits normally used for smelting to grill long skewers of meat. His customers loved it. Deeply spiced with exotic flavors, crusty skin, and juicy tender insides, the meats were heaven. Snorri indeed was praised for taking all cuts and all meats available and turning them into wonders. Travelers often suggest trying the Cave Bear Kebabs with the honey-chili sauce. 9 Location - Argral's Arm A dwarf with an eyepatch runs this fine weapon shop. Many (about half) of the items are silvered, but cost less than normal silvered weapons. He has a cape of the local artisans guild. He has a single extremely ornate +2 warhammer on display, and he says he'll only sell it to someone worthy of it. (Any good alignment) 10 Location/NPCs - Martel and Forja Jernmakt of Jernmakt and Daughter The armor shop recommended to you is a rather humble establishment nestled in the heart of the crafting district. Hanging above the door is a sign that reads "Jernmakt and Daughter. " Upon entry, you see a single dwarf hard at work behind his anvil. He appears middle-aged, with a neatly-trimmed black beard and the beginnings of crow's feet around his eyes. He looks up when he hears you enter. "Ah, " he says, emerging from his forge. "Never seen you before. New customers, I take it? Welcome, welcome. My name is Martel Jernmakt and I'm the Mastersmith. " He invites you to have a look around. On one wall, you see an assortment of finely-crafted shields and suits of armor. On the opposite wall, you see weaponry ranging from simple handaxes all the way up to an impressive warhammer. "Admittedly our prices do run a little high here, " says Martel. "What with there being only two smiths in this shop. Pieces can't be made as quickly. Tell you what though, I'll give you a fine discount if you can do the shop a quick favor. Since the monthly arts fair is going on today, Forja is too busy manning our stall there to pick up today's shipment of ore. She's in charge of that side of the business, so you'll need to seek her out for the details. " You soon find yourselves headed to the city plaza, keeping an eye out for the vendor that matches Martel's description: a young blonde who is likely explaining to a bemused customer, in excruciating detail, how to properly forge a sickle. This is not how you expected your day to go, but you're fine with that! 11 Event - The Gong Festival Dwarves are usually a very staid and reserved people. While they do enjoy hoisting a beer with friends, seldom do they get out of hand and become raucous (stereotypes to the contrary). Most of their festivals generally involve food, drink, song, and dance, but it usually respectful and over by bedtime. This is not true of the Gong Festival. Held every year, the Dwarves begin the events by banging a powerfully large gong, forged especially for the festival. It then continues by making as much noise as one can, beating drums, banging pots, using your own gongs or cymbals, shouting, or whatever is loud and noisy. The townsfolk give extra respect to those who go out of their way to be creative. The Noise continues for a full 24 hours, after which everyone finally gets some sleep and enjoys the quiet. No one is sure quite when the festival began or why, and there are many theories: some say the land was attacked by a monster that was hurt by loud noises and driven off, others say it is to celebrate the various storm or forge gods, others give nods to a ancient King who ordered everyone to make no noise under pain of death. It is said when everyone snapped, they made so much noise the Tyrant King fell over dead in a fury at being defied. But whatever the case the Festival is alive and well. Visitors are cautioned to sleep outside the community if possible, as rest is quite impossible. 12 Location/Event - The Chain and Anvil's armwrestling contest Easily spotted by its tavern sign of a massive bulging arm clutching a chain atop an anvil—not to mention the loud din from within— The Chain and Anvil is a raucous tavern known across town. Its clientele are mainly the workers from the surrounding foundries, but outsiders commonly drop in to witness the renowned daily armwrestling contest, and more rarely to participate. Contestant must first best a mechanical arm installed to the wall (str. check 22) before they are allowed to participate in the brackets. The final head-to-head occurs on an anvil cemented in a hollowed out depression. The winner earns the Golden Stein for the night, allowing him or her unlimited beer and the charisma of a champion (+10 charisma bonus in the tavern, +5 circumstantial bonus outside the tavern for week to anyone who knows the contest). Twice a year the contest is limited to returning champions only and the prize is 100 platinum coins. 13 Location - Forthwick Lenscraft & Purveyor of General Arcane Material In the glassmith quarter, the master lenscrafter Gnome, Negisis Forthwick keeps his store. His fine work is quite niche—dwarves tend to have excellent eyesight even into venerable ages, though he also designs and creates all manner of optical devices. But Forthwick had realized that clients from the wizarding community would seek him out looking for spell components and foci. While he appears to lack any spell casting ability himself, his careful work free from any flares of incipient arcane power appears to make for some excellent, if pricier, base material for spell casting (a focus purchased here will reduce the DC of a concentration check by 1, and saves against spells using materials involving his craft are increased by one). In addition, capitalizing on the traffic by magic users, he has expanded his inventory to include most spell components sold cheaply. However, adventurers are unlikely to find any enchanted or magical items per se to purchase here. 14 Location - The Green Market The Green Market is a lively verdant market that has grown in importance and size as the city expanded. What began as a weekly market day in the Mother Protector’s Square, has now become a daily affair with multi-terraced structures and semi-permanent stalls. While you will definitely find dwarven staples like meat stalls with lengths of coiled sausages and bushels of mushrooms, the vendors remain mainly farmers from the surrounding area of human and halfling stock. The fruits and vegetables, even quite commonplace ones, have never quite shaken off their exotic association for the dwarven populace, which perhaps explains their attraction and above-average prices. The current favorite this season are rock melons—really they are no different to other sweet melons other than the pebbling pattern on the rind. But the addition of “rock” was a branding masterstroke and assuages the sensibilities of certain dwarves. Around dusk, the marketplace frequently plays host to street performances, the tale of Baha’s vanquishing of the Red Dragon Dararexthis among a favorite retelling. At anytime outsiders make for easy marks for pickpockets here. At night, the marketplace serves as the resting place to the non-dwarven vagabond community who would otherwise be shifted out by the Guard from other neighborhoods—while it’s unlikely to be the base of operations for a proper thieves’ guild, here might be a good place to make inquiries. 15 Location - Dragonwatch HQ The multistory building that make up the offices of Dragonwatch outshine the business-houses of the more ostentatious merchant barons. That conspicuous capital is probably the best recommendation of their success, since it is largely built on the basis of the hoard of the Red Dragon that once dominated the nearby mountains, and the interest earned on that amount is said to bankroll the Dragonwatch’s continuing activities. Strangely that main activity is apparently the maintaining vigilance against this same vanquished foe, though no one has seen its kind in the five decades since it was routed out. That doesn’t stop Baha Dragonsbane, the founder (who gave up his clansname in place of the moniker that represents his maniacally drive) in his eternal vigilance. Baha, or Capt’n, as his team members call him, bears the evidence of his encounter with Dararexthis or the “worm” visibly on his person: One whole half of his face and most of his scalp sports burn scars, with most of his hair gone. He appears to bear those scars with as much pride as other dwarves might wear their beards. In place of one leg, is a prosthetic made of dragonbone. Dragonwatch develops dragonslaying tactics and equipment, available for purchase at a very steep prices, including elixirs of elemental resistance (absorbing the first 100 hp of damage) an armor-piercing hydraulic returning harpoon. They will also purchase any dragon-related material at high set prices for their research. Dragonwatch continues to patrol the caverns and warrens in the hills nearby, keeping the most detailed and current maps of subterranean passages. 16 Location - The Civic Opera House The Opera House is the pride of the young city, the exterior in stark neo-classical dwarven style, the interior a grand sunken arena imitating their counterparts in the older cities where natural underground spaces were carefully adopted for the sonic qualities. Passages lead to a warren of balconies that allow for audience members to look at the performances but more importantly to be enveloped with seraphic soprano of the prima donna. The scandal is that the present prima donna, perhaps the most talented in the young history of the opera house, is not in fact a dwarf, but a gifted halfling, Antifa. Antifa only goes by her given name, perhaps fitting for a diva of her talent, but also in deference of her complex parentage and her refusal to be drawn into the politics of her identity. Every critic is silenced when they hear her rendition of the aria that concludes The Quest for Sky, the soaring voice even outdoing the magnificent stage work where the dwarven people finally reach the surface and are met with the sun, a mechanical contraption that erupts in lights and dramatically illuminates the opera. However a sect of dwarven hardliners are adamant that the prima donna is an insult to dwarven history and have threatened solemn consequences if she persists in her performance. 17 Location - The Monastery of Dwarven Perfection Walls encircle the monastery complex in perfect geometrical precision, emphasizing the withdrawn nature of the order of dwarven monks it houses. The Order is a contradiction: orthodox in their beliefs, but almost heretically drawing from the teachings of a human deity of physical perfection. Novitiates are shaven of their beards and scalps and are not permitted to grow their hair back until they progress in their studies. It is a common practice for the young monks to travel in twos and threes with one of them visibly displaying their shaven state. Anyone who challenges the dwarf to a brawl will discover the dazzling style of the order, conceived with an attention to the physiology of their shorter stature, with bizarre grappling methods bringing other dwarves and anyone taller to their back to be pummelled to submission. Since most locals have wised up to the set-up, monks open their gates to hold contests in the courtyard behind their walls. The grounds also houses a library with clerics engaged with reinterpreting their religious texts of martial arts manuals to the dwarven context. The monastery is rumored to house a tower of deadly challenges, but no tower is evident inside. However, if adventurers petition the abbot, they might discover the tower in below ground which they might test their abilities against. 18 Location - The Beryl Street Stock Exchange During the day, Beryl Street is the sight of animated bustle, dwarves rushing to and fro from the central building to the establishments and offices across the street. Instead of taverns serving mead, Beryl Street has coffee and tobacco houses catering to the city’s financiers and speculators with the Stock Market’s licensed traders identifiable by their red collars. Most of these establishments have open terraces facing the Stock Market, a building in constant state of unfinished renovations due to its refusal to close down. The stock market floor or the trading pit is crowded by brokers who are either furiously exchanging their shares in animated but silent hand gestures or shepherding business owners and traders of goods to the appropriate clerk to sell shares of their goods or cash in. The upper floors barter in more complex financial instruments and entrance is strictly limited to persons of sufficient means and rank. But lowly caravan leaders can collect capital by offering shares on future profits. They often gather and post requests for adventurers to hire as guards which may lower their insurance costs. The number of red collars available are strictly controlled as a means to control rampant speculation or runs on markets. Paladins of the Coins, a strange order ever vigilant against fraud and unfair trade practices are empowered to enforce regulations. They are the final arbiters having the power to ban traders for periods as brief as a day to a lifetime—and sometimes the price of transgression is the edge of their blades. Errand boys (and girls) loiter outside the building waiting to deliver news of the market or selling copies of the Beryl Street Broadsheet. The broadsheet collates summaries of the market, prints correspondences about political and economic news and rumors, and lists urgent job vacancies—as the market grows it has become the the most reliable source of news in the city. 19 Location - Brigid's Dairy A sizable house, this is the home to Brigid Flintcliff, a respectable dwarven maiden from a long line of respectable dwarven maidens. Her family has owned cattle and sheep for centuries (literally) and have mastered the art of cheese and butter making. Leaving her mother's house and bringing her own collection of sheep and cattle, she hopes to start a new branch of her clan in this new city. Already her dairy has become talk of the town due to the sharp and pungent cheeses she makes, perfect to serve with a stout mug of dwarven ale and rich dark bread. In addition, she has seen fit to provide whey (a by product of cheese making) for the city's poor (mostly urchins and clanless wanderers) to mix with barley (which her neighbor the baker supplies) to make a hearty porridge. Her cellar is very deep and runs near a cold spring which keeps it very cold, perfect for aging her various cheeses ans butters so they don't spoil. Smartly, she managed to bring a rock loaded with mold and moss from her mother's cavern with her, so everything she makes has a faint taste of home, just perfect for those missing the comforts of the old city and lands. 20 Location - Ironbloom Stables Still run by the Ironbloom family, this stables is located in a contained sprawl on the outside of the city wall against the natural rockface and is connected to both the bygone mine system and the city overground. With many of the major mineral veins drying up, the specially bred diminutive equines selected for mine work are no longer in demand as the were in the past. The Ironbloom stables, however, still preserves the Pit Puller breeds, transporting a number of them to the horse markets around the region yearly. The pit puller are a curious breed with features that suggest possible magic alteration in their past: they appear to have some degree of darkvision or some unerring instinct to avoid dangers underground and can subsist on a diet of lichen, moss and mushrooms commonly found underground. Their disposition are more suited for hauling loads than carrying riders, rarely going faster than most humanoids can walk. If faced with actual danger, they often turn tail and flee from conflict, awaiting their owners 200 feet away. But for the adventurer that requires a pack animal underground, Ironbloom Stables is good bet. The stables has also diversified their animal stock with ponies for above ground riding and carriage pulling, something that can be fashionable in some quarters of the city. 21 Location - The Diplomatic Enclave The Diplomatic Enclave is overlooked by the City Stronghold. The cities oldest allies are well represented, but new commercial ties have brought new powers into the walls, each jostling for better deals and more access. The most recent entry is probably the most sensational: a city-state of Hell has planted its embassy, an imposing obsidian block of a structure. Allegedly, the treaty worked out protects the city from undue infernal influence and the Duke of the corresponding city of hell is only interested in mining a particular type of shale. The monies pouring in promises to revitalize the mining industry. While quite a few families have now grown richer than ever, people are understandably uneasy. Celestial powers are now said to take an interest in this dwarven city but the very presence of agents of Hell might just be a planned diversion. Otherwise, out of boredom at a once-dull posting or actual urgent state business, rival embassies here are often conniving and stealing each other’s materials: Ciphers to unlock coded messages? Details of intrigues that can be exploited? Each power is interested even if it sometimes seems like a game. Embassies are often looking for wizards and mercenaries to test their security, which might be a perfect opportunity to double cross one employer for another higher paid one. 22 Location - The Museum of Dwarven Antiquities The front face of The Museum of Dwarven Antiquities is an impressive facade fashioned in classical dwarven stonework climbing three floors aboveground and descending some unknown floors below. Two statues of dwarven guardians towering to reach half-way up the structure flank the entrance, themselves an example of the museum's mission as they are reputed to be rescued and restored from a city that was sunk by a cataclysmic volcanic eruption. The museum proper extends in two wings from the corner foyer, each floor displaying dwarven artifacts from a separate age of history in ascending order with the recent past furthest up and objects of deep antiquity from before dwarves made it to the surface fittingly underground. The two wings of the museum make up two sides of the property and a portcullis gate enclosing the back creates an wide interior of smaller buildings and a sculpture garden of famous dwarven personages. Frequently the grounds near the gate houses currently returning convoys of excavated items that are being unloaded and prepared for the collection. As impressive as the exhibits are, most of the museum’s holdings are actually housed in a separate structure in the interior, a squat windowless cube of mysterious construction. The curator, a humorless former adventurer, has a low opinion of members of his erstwhile profession who are so keen on pillaging his people’s heritage. He will however compensate adventurers better than market price for any materials of historical value. 23 Location - Tower of Tales, bookseller and publisher The Tower of Books is a three storey structure that takes up a corner of the block where Bedrock Boulevard and Drumskills Street meet. The young Dwarf woman Bodil Talespinner runs the business that once specialized in used books and recovered tomes. While the basement still carries such material where an old gnome Lestania still grously tends to the traditional stock, the upper floor is dominated by a new literary form that has taken hold of the city, the novel! Tower of Tales publishes under its own imprint Tower Books next door, putting out a fortnightly anthology of cheap serialized chapters by a few pseudonymized authors. Readers are required to purchase the subsequent editions to discover what happens next. When the plotlines reach their conclusion, Tower Books prints the books in a special digest with a scandalous cover. The success of the novels has generated several genres, from political drama to lurid romance, though oftentimes they are difficult to tell apart. One popular serial features a half-orc adventuress name Felicia who sports an gleaming axe, leading fans to flock to any half-orc adventuress that remotely fits that description. The harassment that half-orc women face has lead to the guard turning a blind eye to occasions when they return the attention with violence. Sadly, now fans proudly display their bruises as badges of their devotion, colloquially now know as Felicia’s kiss. 24 Location - Orc Town, home of the gladiatorial games In any other city, Orc Town might designate the part of the city where half-orcs might congregate. This is true here as well, but here surprisingly are a settled populations of true orcs, organized into clans and keeping up with many of their old ways, including shamanistic worship and intense martial training. The strange—friendship is a strong term—non-enmity is maintained in part by the the gladiatorial games that take place in the colosseum. Traditionally the opponents were exclusively dwarves versus orcs, but now competition is open to all races granted that they prepare under a recognized school. Some gladiatorial school remain exclusively mono-racial, especially the dwarven ones that are located outside Orc Town. But the remaining schools in Orc Town with their smaller population of True Orcs now open entry to most races, especially to humans with orc heritage. This is a legacy of the venerated social reformer of long past, the Orc Shaman Berg Livershank who saw the shifting changes on the surface and sought to integrate an Orc way of life with their new neighbors. Highly charismatic and learned, it was hard to argue with him when he lived up to his name and liver-shanked his philosophical opponents when they refused his philosophy of nonviolence. The gladiatorial schools garner the popularity of adoring fans and bookies run number with a passion that matches the traders at the stock exchange. Apart from the entertainment of the colosseum, Orc Town controls the larger abattoirs and slaughterhouses, tanneries and leatherwork in the city. 25 The Stepwell: Home for the Naiads, The Sunken Sea Druids and the Fungal Farms The Stepwells is a jarring relic in a city that is otherwise quite modern. Extending to the sky are a hive of arches and pavilions, simultaneously irregular and strangely geometric. Stone walkways crisscross the structures that descend into deep wells, the largest hundreds of meters across. All indications are that the stepwells predate the city by millenia and the city grew to incorporate the stepwells within its wall over time. Its provenance is a mystery: closest to the surface the stonework appears dwarven in nature, but the architectural features and adornment become more obscure as one descends. The dwarves have installed a plumbing system that feeds into pools and waterflows above and continue outwards to feed the city proper. But they inherited a system that confounds the engineers in the present, perhaps because as some as posited it is divinely powered. At the deepest levels are a community of naiads who concern themselves with the health and the protection of the water and access is zealously defended by a esoteric druidic circle. Branching out from the built structures underground are warrens and caverns whose warm damp environs are homes to the cities best fungal farms, though only one dwarven clan continues to pursue the profession leaving much of the farming to a community of myconids rarely seen aboveground. The surface is a popular hangout for the citizens, many a couple wander the cool recesses of this peaceful reprieve from the rest of the urbanscape. Making a separate list for rumors. Feel free to submit ones as speech. If you want to suggest outcomes or their veracity I can add another column for them dx Rumors 1 The Mayor was hosting his daughter's wedding and during the ceremony she was kidnapped. The mayor is desperately seeking adventurers to rescue her. 2 A newly opened pub is having its ale stolen at night but there is no sign of forced entry. The pub owner wants you to find out what is happening to his ale. 3 A master smith has heard of a rare and valuable metal in an old abandoned mine that is infested with gnolls. He will handsomely reward whomever can get him some ore. 4 Workers of the sewer expansion project have gone missing. The supervisor is willing to pay adventurers to find them and kill whatever had been taking them. 5 A dwarf came rushing out of the mines holding a mineral of unnatural color and/or shape. 6 A borough has a number of "tall" Dwarves. There's talk of a professional stretcher is in town he is gaining popularity. 7 A sub-basement level at the The Museum of Dwarven Antiquities reputedly hosts a special floor dedicated to Duergars sealed with intricate arcane locks and magical defences against divination. [The following is an excerpt from Unveiling the Occult by Rikmin Dartmouth] ///////////////////////////////////// I have travelled the length and breadth of Aokoa. I have seen its many magnificent wonders, and I have been privy to some of its most terrifying secrets. But in all my travels, I don’t think I have encountered anything that combines the magnificent and the terrifying as does the Coven of Serrael. If you have ever wondered why the Thagran Isles are so suspicious of magic, why public practices of magic are forbidden, the reason is the Coven of Serrael: Thagra’s best and worst-kept secret. The prohibition on magic serves a twofold purpose. For one, it is because the Coven has such a fearsome reputation that all magic is viewed as sinister. For two, it is because the Coven monopolizes magic on the isles. If you are a magic-practicing visitor, you may find yourself brought into the Coven’s circle, whether you want to be or not. Who is Serrael? This is the first question we must answer on the journey to understand the Coven. Many people understand Serrael just to be a thing of nightmares — a monster used to scare children. But the truth is more complicated than that. In the earliest records we have of Orcish religion, it seems that Serrael was simply a creator god. He was a great spirit of the sky who mated with Aokoa, the earth mother, to produce life. Excavations of old hunter-gatherer sites suggest that they burned sweetgrass and offered prayers. They had animistic ideals that venerated animal spirits. Things began to change roughly 5, 000 years ago (or 3, 900 BYI in the Orcish calendar). It is at this point we begin seeing the first scrolls written in Griskrit, the ancient ancestor the the modern scholarly tongue Griza. These scrolls paint a different picture of Serrael. They say that he created life on Aokoa along with his brother, Annael. Annael wished for all life to be completely equal, to live in peace and harmony. Serrael found this tiresome, so he began making changes to the lifeforms on Aokoa. He changed the appetites of the creatures on land and in the sea, so that the strong would now seek to devour the weak. When Annael saw what his brother had done, he was enraged. So they fought. They fought long and hard for ages untold. When the battle was finished, Serrael scattered his brother into millions of pieces across the night sky, leaving them as twinkling stars. But Serrael had grown weaker in the process. He could no longer change Aokoa however he wished. So he sought mortal agents to carry out his will. The Orcs were his chosen people, for their prodigious strength. He offered them powerful magic if they would offer him blood in return. It is unclear exactly what brought on this sudden drastic change in their religious doctrine, but the Orcs committed themselves wholly to the worship of Dark Lord Serrael. Instead of giving offerings of sweetgrass and incense, they gave offerings of blood, and lots of it, and they began a savage campaign of conquest and destruction that made them infamous for millennia. Wholesale worship of Serrael ended with the Orcish Emerald Age, as they turned to science and rationalism. The idea of Serrael persisted in their popular culture has something of a fairy tale monster. A shortened form of his name, Serra, is still used as an expletive, in such examples as “Serra curse it” or “Serra’s flame”. But in the Coven, the Dark Lord Serrael is still very much alive, and he still demands blood. History To properly understand the Coven of Serrael, we should go back to the beginning. The Coven has its roots in the same time as the great shift in Orcish theology, 5, 000 years ago. Their own legends say that around this time, Dark Lord Serrael begot a daughter. Accounts differ on whether the mother was an Orc woman, or a spirit from beyond who was able to take mortal guise. In any case, the daughter, Hekasha, walked Aokoa in the flesh of an Orc. She introduced the Orcs to the Dark Lord’s magic. She imbued them with new power and created the first circle of shamans, who were possessed of magical ability. One of them was named the Great Shaman. He, Hekasha took as her husband, and he was called the living conduit of the Dark Lord. The circle of shamans then ruled. The Orcs were divided into tribes, and each tribe answered to a shaman, who acted according to the Dark Lord’s will. They organized themselves into a truly terrifying war band who swept across the plains, conquering all in their path. They didn’t conquer out of the need for new lands or resources, but simply for new blood that they could sacrifice to their Dark Lord. But another great shift came in Orcish history. Belno the Most Enlightened, a shaman himself, led an intellectual revolution. He told his followers to throw off the shackles of savagery, to reject the teachings of the Great Shaman and the Dark Lord, and to pursue greatness through science. He might have been killed immediately, but the Great Shaman of the time time had grown fat and complacent in his position. He didn’t take Belno seriously until it was too late, and he had gained a massive following. The shamans were left behind as the Orcs went to found the City of Iskwa and begin their Emerald Age. And that is where the Coven of Serrael began. The circle of shamans came together in secret. They seized the pathetic Great Shaman who had allowed Belno to seize control. They said that he failed in his office and brought shame to the Dark Lord. So they burnt him alive. That same fire has been kept burning eternally for 1, 100 years, with some embers saved in a magically sealed box. They call it the Bitter Flame and reignite it as a punishment for those who gravely transgress against the Coven. The remaining shaman founded the Coven of Serrael. They adopted the new title of witch for themselves, and the head of their coven would be the Witch-King. They agreed to operate in secret, hidden away from the eyes of the world. They still made their blood sacrifices, even though they were not as numerous as they once had been; but the Dark Lord was satisfied of their loyalty. They stalked the streets of Iskwa, searching for children who exhibited magical potential, and they abducted them, bringing them into the Coven to join their order. Their numbers grew, and as they continued to practice their spells in the darkness, so did their power. Things changed again with the fall of Iskwa, when the Orcs were attacked and conquered by the Empire of Shai. They were slaughtered by the millions, and the survivors fled to the coast, pursued by an army intent on wiping them out. But that did not happen. Before the Shaii army reached the Orcish refugees, a terrible plague swept through their ranks. They lost half their numbers inside a week, and then the plague travelled backwards into the heart of Shai. The Empire crumbled over the next year, after losing a third of its population. No one has given me a straight answer, but it is commonly believed that the Coven of Serrael created this plague to save their Orcish brethren. And in doing so that they extracted something in return — perhaps the right to govern Orcish affairs from the shadows. At any rate, it is almost universally agreed that it was the Coven of Serrael that brought the Orcish refugees to the Thagran Isles. What makes a witch? Much like other mages in Aokoa, witches are born with an innate magical ability that allows them to utilize the spells and rituals of the Coven. It is a commonly repeated belief that every witch is born with a particular birthmark: eight small points evenly arranged in a circle. When the witch is inducted, he or she receives an octagram tattoo linking these points together. However, it is my belief that the idea of birthmarks is largely folkloric, as I have never seen evidence of magical ability outwardly showing on a mage’s body in my own experience. It’s telling that in almost every case, the tattoo a witch receives over their birthmark is given in a place where they cannot see themselves. Witches begin their training at 13 and become fully-fledged members of the Coven at 16. In that time, they are instructed on how to read and speak Griskrit, the ancient Orcish dialect, for that is the language they use for all their many spells and incantations. They must also memorize the recipes for more than 400 different potions, and the preparations for 150 different rituals. They must acquaint themselves with the five basic tenets of witchcraft: naturomancy, auramancy, illusion, conjuration, and herbalism. Some of the rituals that a witch undergoes increase the likelihood of producing magical offspring. This is far from certain, however. All children born of the Coven are given over to one of three secluded Islander communities to be raised. Those who show magical aptitude by the age of 13 are taken into the Coven. Those who don’t are watched closely and encouraged to breed as quickly as possible. Sigils and Symbology The Coven of Serrael has a great affinity for symbols. The primary symbol of their order is the Octagram. The eight points of the Octagram represent the original circle of shamans whom Hekasha imbued with power. Each witch in the Coven is given an octagram tattoo upon induction, as I mentioned above. That is the only time a witch will receive an octagrammatic tattoo; however, the symbol is used widely in all their buildings and places of power. Every ritual will incorporate an Octagram in some major way. Like other Orcs, the witches of the Coven care a great detail for tattoos. Every single witch I met was tattooed extensively all over their body. However, these tattoos differ from the tattoos which adorn other Orcs in a few distinct ways. For one, witches will only tattoo with black ink: a very particular kind of black ink which does not fade but also glows slightly blue under moonlight. For another, they do not use any plant or animal imagery in their tattoo art. The tattoos of the Coven consist of bits of Griskrit script or geometric arrangements. In some cases these are purely decorative, but in many cases they serve a utility. It is my understanding that having a particular spell inked on one’s skin makes it easier to incant, and certain geometric patterns make it easier to channel certain types of energy. I have recorded many hundreds of such tattoos during my time, and you can find a full accounting of them if you buy my companion book, An Illustrated Guide to the Occult. But in the matter of witch tattoos, there are some symbols that carry with them considerable significance, and are only given to a member of the Coven once they have been earned. For example, a witch receives a special tattoo after achieving the fourth and highest level of proficiency in one of the five major disciplines: Naturomancy, Auramancy, Illusion, Conjuration, and Herbalism. And there is another sigil that is reserved solely for the Witch-King himself. Spellcasting It was a matter of puzzlement for me how the Coven’s spells and incantations work. How does one achieve an act of magic merely by repeating a specific phrase. It was explained to me thusly: the words do not create the magic, but simply describe it. When a mathematician describes that a circle’s radius is equal to two times its radius multiplied by Pi, she is not making that true. The ratio is true whether her mathematical equation describes it or not; but yet it is only after that truth is described mathematically that it can be useful to anyone. So it is for spells, only using words instead of numbers. They describe the relationships that exist between the energies that permeate our world, and in doing so they are able to utilize them. A witch is innately attuned to the metaphysical energies that vibrate between leylines. However, their training is what allows them to properly understand the way these energies intersect and overlap. A spell improperly cast can have disastrous consequences, because the witch needs to account for all the natural fluctuations. A single spell produces ripples that affect the fabric of reality in the surrounding area, so spells must be recalibrated on the fly. Small changes in inflection and intonation can be very important. The matters of ritual and potionry follow similar guidelines, though I am less privy to their secrets. Different types of energy are drawn to different shapes, and the various sigils in use channel these energies differently. The art of potion-making is quite similar to more mundane forms of herbalism, where plants are combined together to create medicinal or psychoactive compounds. But those attuned to magic can also pick up on subtle magical energy that inhabits organic matter. Apparently this is called praxa. This praxa vibrates at different frequencies in everything. Most of the time, bringing materials together creates a discordant praxic jumble that has no effect. But if they are combined in precisely the right way, these frequencies harmonize to produce the desired effect. Familiars Some witches have familiars. These familiars are constant companions that take the form of various sorts of animals. It is my understanding that the familiar is not actually the animal it presents as, but some manner of preternatural being with no permanent form of its own. It takes the form of an animal and then binds with the witch. Once this binding has happened, the familiar’s life and the witch’s life are entwined, and neither can live without the other. But make no mistake, even if a familiar appears to be a very small animal, they are extremely difficult to kill. A witch is tattooed with this sigil when they have achieved the right to have a familiar. Apparently, the familiar allows the witch to externalize some of their power. They can then draw upon the power stored in the familiar to create more tremendous spells. Familiars are also innately capable of performing certain magical functions. Chiefly, a familiar is capable of casting a protective aura that can dispel a number of magical effects. This makes familiars a very useful line of defense against magical attack. Familiars are also often employed as spies, seeing as they are capable of blending in with the natural world. Necromancy Necromancy is a discipline of the Coven, but not one that new inductees study. Very few witches even learn the basics of this dark art, and fewer still become proficient at it. It is wise to beware anyone who bears this sigil, for that is the mark of a necromancer. I estimate there are fewer than ten necromancers in the entire Coven. But I have heard that the Witch-King is one of them. Necromancy is, of course, the art of death magic. They are a common archetype in gothic romance, casting spells ro reanimate the dead. A necromancer does not have full dominion over life and death, however. One cannot bring someone back from the dead in the same manner they existed in life (or if they can, it is kept quite secret). The practice of reanimating corpses to serve as mindless slaves is another trope in fiction. It can happen. I heard stories as I travelled about walking skeletons, and shambling, decaying corpses. However, raising a body from the dead is a very difficult and unpredictable process, and most necromancers have found a more reliable way to work their magic. This is in the creation of kleiveer. A kleiveer is a sort of undead servant; but it is distinct from other undead servants you may have read about in that a kleiveer must be created from a living person. Humans, it seems, have the physiology most amenable to making kleiveer. There is a very intricate process that goes into creating one, and I am afraid I am not privy to all those details. What I do know is that a kleiveer must have this sigil marked permanently in two different places on their body. It may be tattooed, branded, or carved into the flesh. I also know that a kleiveer’s natural human blood is replaced by a dark ichor. At a glance, a kleiveer looks like a normal human. Their motor functions operate normally, as do their sensory organs. Their flesh shows no signs of decay. However, the internals of their body do not function as they would in a living being. A kleiveer has no heartbeat. Checking for a heartbeat is the surest way to determine whether the person in front of you is a kleiveer, but how often do we press our hands to strangers’ chests? A kleiveer does not eat or sleep. They may draw breath when needed for speaking, but breathing is not required for the function of their body. This means that they can survive indefinitely underwater. The question of how the kleiveer, without ordinary lifesigns, can avoid decaying as corpses do quite puzzled me. I was able to study a few subjects closely, and made interesting findings. A sample of the dark ichor that flows in a kleiveer’s veins defied my own scientific understanding. I could get no discernible reading from my microscope. My companion then directed me to use a device of the Coven, called a spectroscope, which showed that the ichor burned with a variety of mysterious energies. These energies, it seems, is what keeps the muscles from atrophying and allows continual movement. My analysis of a kleiveer’s cells show that the cells are still alive, technically, but they have gone inert. Normally human cells can be seen to multiply and then die off, replaced by new cells. These cells appear to be frozen in stasis, neither dying nor multiplying. Even more interesting: a sample of ordinary human skin will show many thousands of microorganisms living on the surface; even more living in the intestinal tract; yet the kleiveer has none. After taking several samples, I had to conclude that no microorganisms live on or inside the body of a kleiveer. Whatever the dark ichor does to keep their bodies functional but not alive also makes the body hostile to all other living things, no matter how small. They have the benefit of not aging, but they have a major disadvantage: they can’t heal naturally. Even small injuries that would be of no mind for a living being will simply stay open on their bodies. These wounds can be healed magically, but if that is not an option than they are simply stitched shut. There are a great many kleiveer who work upon ships (for their skill of being able to dive underwater without needing to breathe) and they can often be spotted by their many crude and grotesque stitches. The behaviour of the kleiveer varies with the skill of the necromancer. Most of the kleiveer I encountered were rigid. They moved when instructed to and carried out their tasks, and then returned to a static position. I also noticed that many of them had difficulty making a variety of facial expressions. There was one, however, that I never would have suspected of being anything other than a regular human woman until I was invited to feel her heartbeat. Her movements, vocalizations, and expressions were all exceedingly natural. And apart from being a little cool to the touch, she felt very alive. I was told that she had been created by the Witch-King himself. His kleiveer are the most lifelike, it seems. No wonder there is such paranoid in Thagra about kleiveer spies inserted into their cities. A kleiveer is the perfect slave. They follow the orders of their master no matter what. Ownership can be extended four degrees from the original. They are beholded first to the necromancer who created them. Then to whomever the necromancer indicates is their new master, then to whomever that master may offer them to, and then one more time. So a necromancer may pass her kleiveer onto a slave trader, who sells him to a ship captain, who then extends control to his first mate. The first mate would be unable to delegate anyone else to order the kleiveer around, and the captain could rescind the first mate’s authority over them at any time. If the captain died without giving anyone else authority over the kleiveer, then they would either enter a resting mode or continue operating under their most recent orders. The ship would have to return to the slave trader to have control bestowed again. The kleiveer will always give priority to a higher level of authority (the highest being the original necromancer). A kleiveer created by a less skilled necromancer will perform exactly the function it is told to do and then enter rest mode. Those created with more skill will have more natural idle behaviour and more advanced sensory response. One created with the highest level of skill can simply be given a broad set of standing orders and manage their own behaviour and decision-making within that. For example, if you need a blanket, you can tell a low-level kleiveer to get you one. They will march quickly to the attic, grab the first blanket they see, return with it, and re-enter rest mode. A medium-level kleiveer will walk towards the attic, pausing to say good morning to the cook, go up to the attic, search through several blankets for what seems to be the warmest, then return with it and ask if you need anything else. A top-level kleiveer will simply recognize that you are cold, will offer to go get a blanket, will stop in the kitchen to ask the cook to prepare hot leek soup, will go up to the attic, check the mousetraps, find a blanket that is warm but not too warm, return downstairs, stop to pet the dog, and then present you with your blanket. My next book, Fantastic Gems and Where to Mine Them will be coming soon to a bookseller near you. //////////////////////////////////// Credit for the sigils linked in this post is here and here.
